Late 19th Century Japanese polychrome and quilded  figurine of OIRAN.

The training and regulating of ladies as professionals in the art of pleasing men is an old tradition in Japan, dating at least from the early 17th century. The oiran were the best classes among these women of pleasure. Oiran might walk out elaborately dressed with brocade obi tied in front, high platform geta shoes, and the most elaborate hairstyle, attended by apprentices and little girls. The porcelain Kutani figurine depicts Oiran with beautiful rendered kimono playing with small dog. Her kimono adorned with flowers motif and finely enameled with blue, purple, green and gold colors.

She measures 28 cm/11,2  inches in height and is in excellent condition.
