Late 19th Century Japanese polychrome and quilded
figurine of OIRAN.
The training and regulating of ladies as professionals
in the art of pleasing men is an old tradition in Japan, dating at least from
the early 17th century. The oiran were the best classes among these women of pleasure.
Oiran might walk out elaborately dressed with brocade obi tied in front, high platform geta shoes,
and the most elaborate hairstyle, attended by apprentices and little girls.
The porcelain Kutani figurine depicts Oiran with beautiful
rendered kimono playing with small dog. Her kimono adorned with flowers
motif and
finely enameled with blue, purple, green and gold colors.
She measures 28 cm/11,2 inches in height and is in excellent condition.
It is very difficult to come across a figurines of this subject matter and quality.
This is truly a very lovely piece.
